As a Wizard Style Archetype, you're used to looking deeper. You're intrigued by symbolism and how things are made. That's why fashion is such an easy thing for you to take on. But first, you have to find a way into it, which is why I've created a short list of starting points. Here are seven key pieces for a Wizard Style Type to help you find your magic.
The 7 Basic Pieces for the Wizard Archetype
The key ideas behind the Wizard Style Archetype are dramatic, meaningful, and timeless. You'll see what I mean in the descriptions below.
Dramatic Silhouettes
I hope I don't offend anyone when I say that Wizard Archetypes can be pretty over-the-top. Gandalf, Elphaba, and Merlin are all beloved wizard archetypes with a dramatic streak. Whether it's because of your deeper connection to the universe, or you just really like things that go swoosh, Wizard Style Types enjoy big, dramatic silhouettes. These can include dolman sleeve tops, extra-wide-legged pants, robes, or abayas.
Anything that's floor-length with big sleeves is going to do the trick and leave an impression. If that much extra fabric bothers you, but you still want the dramatic look, robes and draped scarves are removable. Tunics are a good option, and you can find wide-legged pants with elastic on the bottom hem so you don't trip over everything.
Vintage Silhouettes
When I tell a Royal Style Type to dress timelessly, they'll gravitate towards solids and basics. If I tell a Wizard Style Type to dress timelessly, you'd probably throw on a medieval top with your jeans. This is because Wizard Archetypes are not so much timeless as "out of time." They're comfortable borrowing fashions from different parts of history because they're intrigued by everything.
If that's a road you want to go down, I caution against doing it willy-nilly. Learn about what you're wearing, find a way to connect to it, and learn how to use it correctly. Whether or not you actually use it the right way is up to you, but at least know what you're getting into.
Bold Patterns
Patterns are big for the Wizard Style Type, but unlike types, they're attracted to patterns that have significant meanings. Whether it's a geometric pattern with links to numerology or an ancient way of weaving, patterns for Wizards don't just look cool; they matter.
As such, Wizard Style Types are attracted to patterns and prints associated with more spiritual practices. This can be astrological, Celtic, Buddhist, Catholic, Islamic, etc. Again, be respectful when you're adapting these styles. Wizards know they're not just styles, they're a part of a long tradition.
A Meaningful Totem
Gandalf has his staff, Cardcaptor Sakura has her wand, and you probably have something as well. Maybe it's a stone you've carried for years, or a ring gifted by your grandmother. Whatever it is, taking it with you is an important part of your daily ritual.
If you don't have one yet, you have a wonderful opportunity to find one! There are countless pieces of jewelry created with symbols or affirmations that can remind you of your personal power. Totems don't have to be jewelry or accessories, but it helps if they're small and portable.
Gems & Scarves
Similar to the Meaningful Totem, wearing fancy gemstones in accessories is a go-to for the Wizard Style Type. Gemstones come with their own meanings, and they can add an air of ancient mystery to any Wizard Look.
A scarf is a quick way to add a Wizard Style Type flair to any outfit. Pashmina scarves, silk scarves, and ponchos add textures to your outfit. Plus, it's easy to drape these in interesting ways, add brooches, or tie them in elaborate bows. Either way, it's a great accessory.
Final Thoughts
Of course, none of these are hard and fast rules for how Wizard Style Types should dress. Wizards have to make sure their style speaks not only to their practical lives, but their inner life as well. It's important that you let your intuition help you thread that line between "costumey" and authentic expression. This means that if you decide to wear chainmail or a big hat, your friends won't go "huh??", they'll think "Huh. Yeah, that makes sense."
